Abstract

|
Ventricular minor-axis dimensions were measured by echocardiography at end-systole and end-diastole in five groups of patients from March 1981 to November 1982: (I) normal; (II) hypertensive heart disease with congestive heart failure; (III) mitral stenosis with congestive heart failure; (IV) mitral insufficiency with congestive heart failure; and (V) aortic insufficiency with congestive heart failure.
Cardiac pump function was evaluated by determination of left ventricular volumes and ejection fraction from the echocardiographic dimensions using formulae previously reported. The fractional fiber shortening was also determined.
The results were as follows:
1) Patients in group II, IV, V had increased values for LVDd compared to group I, and those in group III had reduced values.
2) Those in group II, III, IV, V had higher values for LVDs compared group I.
3) Those in group II, III, IV, V had reduced values for fractional fiber shortening and ejection fraction.
4) Those in group IV, V had higher values for stroke volume, whereas those in group III had lower values significantly and those in group II had also lower values.
